TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan braced for aftershocks on Monday, a day after a powerful earthquake shook the island, killing five people and causing several buildings to collapse.

Nearly 300 aftershocks have been recorded since the earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, rocked the island on Sunday, causing several buildings to collapse and injuring 272 people.

Most damage occurred in the densely populated capital, Taipei.

"We could see aftershocks with a magnitude of around five in the next two weeks," said a Central Weather Bureau seismologist.

Five workers were crushed to death and 20 were injured when a crane toppled from its perch on the 56th-storey of a building under construction in Taipei.

Construction of the 101-storey, or 508 metre (1,666 feet), Taipei Financial Centre has been halted pending further safety checks. Officials and prosecutors inspected the skyscraper on Monday to check if there was any damage to the main structure.

The tower was designed to rival the Petronas Twin Towers in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur as one of the tallest buildings in the world.
