The current situation of AMD reminds me very much of the period before the Athlon intro. At that time, I had high hopes for the K6-3, K6-2+ and K6-3+ putting AMD back into the drivers seat before the Athlon intro.

It never happened. These chips were delayed, and delayed again. Then we were told they would be "notebook chips" rather than desktop chips. When they finally arrived, they only matched the K6-2 in MHz.

Each AMD core design seems to be good for only two process generations. For Athlon it is 0.25 and 0.18u. Further progress requires a new core. (Hammer) The Athlon core has been tweaked twice (TBird and Palomino) and both these tweaks were oriented towards the 0.18u process -- perhaps too much specifically oriented to 0.18u implementation.

I think the same limitation applies to Intel, which is why Prescott on 0.09 may be disappointing if it is just a revamped P4.
