TOKYO, Apr 2, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- In a statement congratulating KDDI Corp. for the company's commercial launch of its CDMA2000 1X network, Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDMA Development Group (CDG) ( www.cdg.org), stated: "KDDI's launch of CDMA2000 1X is yet another marquee achievement for advanced wireless technology. Today there are 12 commercial CDMA2000 networks around the globe giving more than 6 million subscribers access to cutting-edge data services and applications. The CDG looks forward to the continued momentum in bringing CDMA2000 services to market."

KDDI's CDMA2000 network is delivering 3G services to 33 municipalities in Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, as well as 12 other major cities, and 477 regional communities. KDDI plans to provide CDMA2000 services to 90 percent of the population by the end of 2002.

"KDDI is pleased to bring CDMA2000 1X services to Japan's wireless consumers," said Tadashi Onodera, president of KDDI. "CDMA2000 subscribers today have experienced the technology's capabilities, including high-speed data connections and multimedia access. KDDI's CDMA2000 service further builds on the promise of 3G and offers consumers a truly mobile experience."

"3G wireless services are changing the way we communicate by providing a more flexible and faster communication channel," said Andy Seybold, industry analyst and editor-in-chief of Forbes/Andrew Seybold's Wireless Outlook. "With CDMA technology, consumers benefit from higher data speeds and a wide variety of devices, while operators gain by delivering both voice and data service offerings."

CDMA2000 1X commercial services are being offered by operators in six countries, including Telesp of Brazil; Bell Mobility of Canada; KT Freetel, LG Telecom and SK Telecom of Korea; Telemobil of Romania; Centennial in Puerto Rico; Leap, MetroPCS, Monet Mobile Networks, and Verizon Wireless of the United States; and KDDI of Japan. Several additional CDMA2000 1X commercial roll-outs are planned for later this year.

The CDMA Development Group is a non-profit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of CDMA technologies. The 110 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers.

The primary activities of the CDG include development of cdmaOne(TM) and CDMA2000 features and services, public relations, education and seminars, regulatory affairs and international support. Currently, there are more than 500 individuals working within various CDG subcommittees on cdmaOne- and CDMA2000-related matters.
