"From 1965 to the present, the CPI has risen about 560%. " (from the article you linked) I'll be darned. I was going to correct this (thought it was lower), but it's true. I don't normally go in for hedonic pricing, but a brand new "new" VW beatle really is twice as good as the 1965 vintage. Better engine, better mileage, infinitely safer, tougher, roomier, better looking, more comfortable, better handling--indeed, pretty nearly the equivalent of a 1965 Porsche.
