It's fairly easy to separate Hamas, Hezbellah (sp??), Islamic Jihad, the PLO, etc. and some refined way to divide up the Palestinian population from one another and then ask the degree to which they share interests and goals.

I think that is the heart of the question. I have little doubt that the long-term goal of Hamas is the destruction of Israel. Does Arafat share this view? If not, does he even have the ability to stop Hamas?

The scenario that probably really gives Israel pause is one in which the Palestinians have a state but Hamas continues it's attacks from the comparative safety of another state. It would be much harder for Israel to reoccupy the West Bank and Gaza at that point....both from a military and political viewpoint. If the Palestinian leadership wanted to start another war (or just allow Hamas to continue one), they would always be able to find a pretext.
