This is a phenomenon so central to many peoples' lives, certainly to mine. I guess most people who identify strongly with a philosophy or belief establish an identification with it. This doesn't jibe with you?

I almost asked about that myself. Not to disagree (or agree) with his point but instead to ask what it had to do with the definition of "conservative" or "conservatism", but then I figured that "and that we should be very careful about stirring up anger and division in society by clumsy attempts to interfere with community norms and private traditions.", tied it in well enough.

I should think that the rest of the paragraph was explanatory enough:

...and that we should be very careful about stirring up anger and division in society by clumsy attempts to interfere with community norms and private traditions. He is leery of an activist government, and sets a high bar before supporting anything resembling social engineering.

Could you tell me more specifically what troubles you?
