Because 1) they care about their own oil interests, 2) they are terrified of their own large, unassimilated, Muslim populations (esp. France), 3) they never cared for those troublesome Jews anyway. As you say, just one of those long-standing conflicts that disgusts outsiders. Especially if they never trouble themselves to learn particulars.
