I agree that Quicken Deluxe/TurboTax is probably the most popular method, but I'm not so sure it's the best. I used it last year with over 3000 separate transactions (most trades become multiple transactions with Datek) and I nearly died. Quicken did a barely-tolerable job of matching lots and required many hours of manual editing. This year I'm staying in Africa and I forgot to bring along Quicken and can't seem to locate the nearest Best Buy (lol) so I looked for alternatives on the web and found some shareware called EasySchD which saved me. It seems to be mainly geared for Datek users and in a relatively simple manner (using the Datek transaction history pages) churns out all the Schedule D entries in less than a second. It does ALL wash sales calculations, if you desire them, with the click of a button. Even better, it reduced the total number of Schedule D entries by sometimes lumping together same day/same symbol trades. If you register it, you can export the data to Excel or to a TurboTax-compatible format but since I used TurboTax for the Web I didn't register it so I'm not sure that it works. Needless to say it saved me days of manual lot-matching and wash-sale calculations not to mention a few hours of data entry on the Schedule D.

I highly recommend it for Datek users, but it may also be useful with other brokerages. BTW, Gainskeeper charges PER TRANSACTION which would be painful for someone like me and this EasySchD shareware did essentially the same thing for free or $39.95 if you register it.

Jeffrey,

Thanks for the input. I use TurboTax, but never saw the need to get Quicken-Deluxe. Perhaps this is the need. I probably even have a coupon for Q-D in my TurboTax box. I will have to check it out again. Meanwhile, could you please answer a couple questions?

With Q-D, is it just a single fee for the software, or do I need to pay monthly/yearly for the service?

GainsKeeper charges based on the number of transactions. $120/$150 for 1000 transacations, $50/$60 for 100 transactions. I have a new PC, so the computer speed is no problem. Thirty minutes for a Schedule D is very fast. It sounds like Q-D is a fixed cost that does not increase with increased transactions.

So Q-D will import the trades directly from Datek?

Can this be done weekly or monthly to keep a running tally of trades?

If you would be so kind as to answer these questions so that I have an idea of the total cost for using Q-D, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Ken
