This sounds good in theory, but in reality, it may be impossible for some.

For many the essence of who they are consists of their cherished beliefs. If you strip them of their ideas or beliefs, they find themselves naked. And being naked can be an uncomfortable feeling in a public forum.

I'm not saying that what you are saying is untrue. Quite to the contrary, I agree with your assessment. But it is inevitable that when certain beliefs and ideas are challenged, some people will take this as a personal affront.

I think the key is to recognize who these people are and to back away when they feel threatened. Give them a bit of breathing room. Of course, some of the best discussions occur when views are challenged and pushed to the edge of the bubble. You'll just have to know the limits of your cohorts thru continual debate.

This is just my opinion.

Disagreement is not per se insulting. What is required is a clearly insulting implication about persons who hold the belief, such as that they must be morons, because the belief is so obviously bogus.......
