re:"As far as military assistance to the Taliban, or groups that later began to call themselves Taliban, I don't see the difference. Add to that the $43 million sent by this administration 4 months before 9/11 to the Taliban supposedly to compensate them for not growing opium, that all looks suspiciously like "underwriting" to someone like me, who doesn't know any better. "

I believe the story about $43 Million going to the Taliban, originates from an article from Salon.Com dated 9-13-01. The U.S. did not give that money to the Taliban, it gave it to International Aid Agencies and NGOs. Salon.Com wrote a retraction on 10-3-01. Before 9/11, I belive the United States was prohibited in giving direct aid to Afghanistan or the Taliban by International Agreement (the Geneva Accords, whereby the Soviets agreed to leave Afghanistan, and the U.S. agreed to not interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan).

"The Enemy With a Thousand Faces," published Sept 13, 2001, originally stated
that the Taliban received $43 million from the United States to reward it for
condemning opium growing as anti-Islamic. In fact, the United States aid did not
go to the Taliban but to international aid organizations and NGOs.
