What is the speed of phoneline networking.

Also, I live in rural area that is subject to many lighting strikes of the telephone poles. I lost about five 2-line phones over the last 10 years. I really don't want my computers "wired" to several miles of telephone poles. I usually leave computers on and that's asking for trouble IMO.
My cable TV incoming signal is properly grounded and I assume there are many fuses that exist to protect the equipment in cable company junction boxes. I don't see same problem with cable TV and internet signal as with phone wires.
