To: Lazarus_Long who wrote (7497 ) 4/6/2002 7:00:03 PM From: marcos Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 21057 Mmm, perhaps more than a tich of arrogance and/or paranoia in that, to suggest that only 'gringo tourist dollars' drive the actions of mexicanos ... there is a natural friendliness, a spirit of hospitality, that compares well with anywhere else i've ever spent time ... there is for obvious reason a deeply ingrained suspicion of the US, however until you spell it out directly people will allow you the possibility of being canadian or british or european continental, all of whom speak at least passable english ... or you might be a 'good gringo', there are such people, you know ... whole colonies of US nationals live around the country actually, in el DF there are daily newspapers in english Canadians generally find México to be easier and more friendly than the US, certainly the former does not present you with hostility at the border ... i could tell you horror stories about flying from here south and changing planes in the US, if your wife does not yet hold a canadian passport they put you both in a little jail with armed guards, it's called TWOV, 'transit without visa' ... we gladly pay more to fly direct with Japan Airlines to avoid that More than a few canadians work in México, btw, along with those of most other nations including the US ... it's the inherited wealth momentum of the G8 nations that pulls into them net economic immigration - think about it, you wanna go to work in the field at the sueldo mínimo mexicano, you'd be lucky to get one happy meal per day out of it .... but if you have a needed specialty and make a connection, it can be done fairly easily - my brother in law knows a scot who is working for the local municipio, or the education department, not sure which but it sounded like a civil service job he has, probably a contract of limited duration sure, but hardly a sign of insularity ... of which there has been too much in México, certainly, but you'll find if you look that things are changing, and have been for a long time now Mind if i ask how much time you've spent outside of the US in areas other than english speaking? ... i preach not only language but travel, btw ... well you don't get the former without the latter, they come together or not at all, imho, and when they come much else comes with them
