Taiwan money scandal has White House ties
Bush officials under scrutiny in influence-peddling intrigue.

By Joshua Micah Marshall

April 5, 2002 | WASHINGTON -- An influence-peddling scandal has erupted in Taiwain, and Bush administration officials have been named in leaked Taiwanese intelligence documents as the recipients of financial support. And while it's too soon to tell whether the story has the stamina to make it halfway around the world, the U.S. officials named -- including Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul D. Wolfowitz and two assistant secretaries of state, along with a Clinton Defense Department appointee -- have already clammed up, refusing to talk to the press.

There is no evidence of any lawbreaking, but the scandal does threaten to expose the type of political influence-peddling that Washington is both renowned -- and reviled -- for.

MSI,

Have you seen anything else on this one? Seems like a nice little scandal to expose come October or so.....

Salaams, Ray

Look, if you and American Spirit want to talk this defamatory crap, go somewhere else. I checked out your links and any website that starts with a swastika instead of stars on the American flag is treasonous.

Please. Let's deal with the present and leave the Cold War behind. Yes the Cold War created some monsters, but to blame the CIA for terrorism is crazy. The Soviet Union had many terrorist training camps in their hey day. They supported Khadaffi and South Yemenese, etc. The fundamentalists who toppled the Shah were also big-time terrorist supporters. The list goes on and on and none of them had CIA help. They were in fact our enemies.

The US's main sin has been dependency on Arab oil, so we need to wean ourselves off it, but in fact we've been very humane and decent to the Arab world. We have made many of them very rich, we have terated them as equals, saved Kuwait, left Saddam in power, took no Iraqi oil after the war and have tried to be the peacebrokers so many times, AND we just liberated Afghanistan from a very evil bunch of terrorist types. Sure the CIA has skeletons in its closet, especially from during the Cold War, but that's a chapter of history which we can finally now close. right now we need a very strong CIA again and this includes the ability to assassinate the Osama Bin Lauden types wherever they may be hiding.
