milo: "Apple, AMD, and the Mac Attack." Fabulous article explaining, perhaps, the recent flurry of AMD financings (UMC in particular) and repeated AMD management references to profitability in q2 FY02...

An Observation by the author:
"Have you noticed that when US OEMs do offer AMD rigs they are not as feature rich as those made by *ntel? This I assure you is not because AMD is not the most advanced processor and a more affordable price on average, but rather WinTel strong arm tactics."

"We will all know a day when computing is easy and FUN! Apple is known for their ability to take the day to day tasks and design a computer around them, instead of the WinTel way of forcing the user to adapt their inadequate and inferior reproductions. And now as the two giants turn on each other and stumble in the dark, Apple and AMD will usher in a new day of computing at every level. No more will you have to sacrifice one feature for another, or function for stability, but all will be obtainable thru the Apple of your iMac!"

Apple/AMD would appear, on the surface, to be an unavoidable partnership as both bring to the table refreshingly innovative technologies and bureaucratically unencumbered managements...In one fell swoop, an OEM that would shake the house of InDell!!!

If you don't have Apple or AMD stock yet, you better get some, because WinTel is about to be schooled!

Milo, Apple has the unerring ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
I rememember when they had ~100 of the personal computer market.
They lost it simply through price, pure greed, and hubris.

Now Motorola has more or less given up on them. They make their systems with very low cost parts and then try to get huge margins and support a fat group of 'loyal' channel partners....most of whom have been sucking on the Wintel teat for many years now and switching their clients over to wintels, or should I say Winamds.

For this tow rok Apple has to change their spots and be ready to maker lower margin machines. The best course of a licence schme where Apple make no hardware.

However Apple is ever greedy and I have faith that they will ruin their chances.
If they sell OSX cheaply enough)OS alone) a market driven by other peoples boxes may ensue...but Apple will probably never do that and will end up as a tail on someones elses dog, possibly Oracle.

Bill

An AMD Clawhammer CPU running OSX

x86-64 would be a logical x86 choice for apple since they don't want everyone to be able to run OSX on a PC (they want to sell the machine above all), this would reduce this potential risk to Hammer's market share.
