I don't know this for a fact, but it stands to reason that Dell pays AOL a portion of the free year that they give away with a new PC. Presumably Dell gives away AOL service to help sell computers. I can understand why AOL would give Dell a discounted rate since they bring them a large number of customers. More volume = lower cost. However, it wouldn't make much sense for AOL to absorb the entire cost of Dell's marketing. What would AOL get out of the deal? Would AOL give away a free year of service just to get their installation program and logo on the desktop of Dell computers?
