Of those three, I've only read Desert Solitaire. It's curious that he considered the book a failure. He never wanted to be labeled a nature essayist, but that is where the publishing business pigeonholed him.

I'm more drawn to his novels. Fool's Progress is great, and of course, The Monkey Wrench Gang. I haven't read em all yet. I hear Black Sun is a must read. I think I've read more stuff about him than stuff he's written....

Have you read his Confessions of a Barbarian?

Don't leave out Hemingway from this list.

Of course, Jane Austen also lived the life she described, except for the being married bits.
