Merrill accused of tainted stock picks

New York state on Monday ordered Merrill Lynch to disclose
conflicts of interest between analysts and investment bankers,
alleging Wall Street's biggest brokerage gave biased stock picks
that cost investors millions of dollars. Officials said a 10-
month state probe uncovered Merrill e-mails showing analysts
privately disparaged companies while publicly telling people to
buy the shares. In one e-mail, an analyst called an Internet
stock a "piece of junk" but gave the company, a major Merrill
client, the highest rating.
