if you just get one system from one place all the same brand and install it, then perhaps it is plug and play, but god help you if you try to use a 3com PCMCIA card on a SMC hub router. Or even use just 3com equipment all by itself.

Even though they have a "standard", since it is unlicensed, it is NOT standard, and IFthe WIFI people were telling the truth about this stuff, they would readily admit that all the makes are differnt and they all DO not talk to one another in all cases.

Differnt backoff routines, differnt setup parameters, differnt frequcny patterns of use, and in some completely differnt modulations. but they all say 802.11B and they all claim that they are easy to use. Much differnt response to interference problems.

If you use just apple and you just plug and play it, then it works. My other son has that one and it does work well. but if you go down to Fry's and buy off the shelf and install what is CHEAP, which is how many of the consumers buy things, chances are you will not get a plug and play system.

I just happened to have an old SMC router from the OEM agreement which happened to have a broken antenna wire and it took hours to find it, locate teh actual problem, and get it working, since it worked well when I was like 10 feet away, but from 50 feet it would not work at all. then when we moved it to teh aprtment, the DSL would noit issue fixed IP addresses and woul dnot get by the security routines and singin for the system (pacbel DSL..). so we had to force the setup to stay wiht a fixed IP and to have the computer setup the security is such a way to get past it. Even the apple system had a problem with that one.

I am glad that you can install something yourslef. But then project that you have P/L responsiblity and have to make something work 24./7 and have anyones card walk up and use your system. Your little home system is contrllled by you and if it doesn;t work today, then ok, you go to the ballgame. If you however have revenue on it and have to make it work, then yo had better have a much deeper understaing of it than "I bought it and installed it wihtout looking at the manual".

Have a nice day.

BTW - THE absolute worst car I have owned is a Mercedes. My Navigator has run for 5 years without a problem. My Mercedes wouldn;t run a month wihtout some help from them.
