I didn't agree with Bush senior's politics, but I found him to be rather humble in the way he comported himself, not sneering or smirky.

I think you've nailed it about peoples' reactions to New England patricians, and it's a shame that this kind of prejudging is acceptable.

That's entirely possible. A little plastic surgery and I might have liked him, too. Except for his war. I didn't like his war. I doubt that old New England families have hereditary facial features. Perhaps the inbred European nobility, but not New England patricians.
