to me, the bombings of nagasaki and hiroshima were one of the most atrocious acts in all of history (aside from the jewish and non-jewish holocausts). again, NOT justifiable!!

On the other hand, the Japanese didn't surrender until after the second bomb so I think the alternative was huge loss of American and, at least an equal loss of Japanese lives, in an invasion of the home islands.

The US army was planning to invade Kyushu (southmost of the Japanese Home islands) in 1946. They were estimating 1 million American casualties and far higher Japanese casualties. The Japanese were at this time arming their women and children with bamboo stakes and exhorting them to fight to the death.

You can make a good case that the two atomic bombs saved lives.
