Am I way off so far and still need to look it up or my vague recallection is not as bad as I am afraid it is?

Albert, only if you do not remember that Germany was required to pay large payments to the allies as retribution for the war. Germany got squeezed and the Weimar Republic had to print money like it was going out of style.......eventually, prices began to go up sometimes several times in one day.......i.e. a loaf of bread might cost 2 1/2 deustche marks [I don't think they were called deustche marks then] and by the end of the day, the same loaf of bread might cost 4 DM. It was crazy......and Germany was in a recession for most of the 20's while the US and other countries were experiencing boom times. Then it paved the way for Hitler to come to power in the early 30's.
