We discussed the fetal stem cell issue last year and we discussed human cloning when last it was an issue. I recall that there was no one here who favored the reproductive cloning of humans. Therapeutic cloning seemed to split out into sides that paralleled the sides on abortion.

Personally, I have some appreciation for the pro-life side on abortion although I don't agree with it. Objection to therapeutic cloning, OTOH, is totally beyond my ken. Seems utterly flat-earth to me.

We've managed to discuss those subjects here before without getting mired in religion. There are some out there, I understand, who object to cloning for reasons other than excessive regard for the humanity of an embryo, the same folks who object to genetically altered corn. I don't recall any discussion of the objections from other than the pro-lifers. Was any of that covered in the show you saw? I don't know much about their objections.

Isn't GW playing god when he says cloning should be banned?
It's actually an improvisational play about what God would do if God were stupid. GW has been trying out for the part his whole life.

RE:.Isn't GW playing god when he says cloning should be banned?
No really, GW can only ban it in the USA, God would be able to ban it everywhere, I believe.

"This reeks of religion so..."

This type of comment has become so common that it actually appears to suggest comfort or empathy for those who care about the human struggle. It is anti-religious and is so dicomfiting to me as to create a personal irony. I find great comfort and understanding for my struggles in the human condition through a constant seeking within religion.

"For the human race to progress it must grow. Not stay stagnant.

I like the human race the way it is. I am happy when there are scientific break throughs that aid us in our understanding of the nature of material universe, its organization, and functioning. The implication that we need to change the human race via cloning is scary.

Should nations, through genetic engineering and cloning, breed supersoldiers?

You realize once the capability exists, most likely someone will use it. And if nation does, then others will feel they must.

Other genetically enhanced specialities are possible too. How about scientists?

I doubt that artists and poets will be on the list, though.

Be careful what you wish for; you might get it.
