I think it was the first use of the term "counterinsurgency." Another interesting aspect: the piece is datelined Washington.

It's a refreshing overview away from the instant reporting that that seems to thrive on reporting body counts any and all tear-jerking accusations without the slightest attempt to confirm reliability.

Actually, the little solid military reporting from anywhere to now has come from Haaretz' Zeev Schiff. While I believe Schiff would agree with Gordon's appraisal, he has the added advantage of knowing the political and IDF players and field well. He has, moreover, built collegial friendships with American military brass over the years.

He will have his say, if not before, certaily once it's over; he'll likely be critical. His analysis of the '73 war is a little classic, in part his reporting of the angry word-for-word disputes between Sharon and his superiors.

I think you posted a bit of Schiff's reporting earlier.
