Al Gore was ready to run to Canada when his college deferments ran out At the time his father was locked in a tough re-election battle and Al's defection would have killed his chances so Mama Gore said "Son you will enlist. Daddy will speak to the President and he will give a heads up to General Westmoreland and you will become a journalist/photographer under due protection of some experienced Vietnam hands. Besides, it will look good on your resume when you run for office. ". And so it was. Al reached Saigon in January , hid out in the locals bars and brothels and when his outfit was de-commissioned in May he was sent home with them. Infantry, BS. BS.
