Actually pure liberalism went out in the 70's except for the minority Naderite green types who are not realistic, but did send Bush to the White House ironically. John Kerry is a progresive centrist leader with a sterling record, including a better military hero than anyone in congress. He is a centrist because he will compromise with the right when it's sensible. Right is not always wrong, that is. If Kerry were to take charge, he wouldn't double the price of gasoline as you suggest. However, some gas taxes if used for the right purpose are necessary. First of all, by the time Bush leaves office we'll have a terible government debt, so revenues will need to be raised from somewhere. State taxes are likely to go way up. There will be a debate about Bush's long-term tax cuts which are all in effect deficit spending. Second, if gas tax revenues were used to build the next generation of clean renewable auto fuels and jump-start the business in a big way that could be well worth it. It would do more to get us off OPEC oil than anything else by far. So we would also save a lot of money trying to defend our interests in the Middle East, etc. As an example, we have a 3 cent extra gas tax here in California. But look what it's done. I live in LA and used to choke on smog. That has been cut in half because of the gas tax for cleaner fuel and now the air is often almost as clear as it is in the country. Big difference and everyone here applauds that. when I go to Houston I literally cannot breathe. That's how big a difference there is now between formerly polluted LA and really polluted Bush-Enron-ville. While Bush offers monster tax breaks to polluters to pollute and Big Oil to drill in wilderness areas, it would be a much better idea to offer those tax incentives to users of clean energy, and those who conserve. This has been proven to work. Also if you want to drive a gas guzzler no one will stop you, you'd just have to pay a little more. That is called an incentive, or a sin tax. same as we have on cigarettes, alcohol and gasoline too to a degree. The question is, if not from gas tax where would the revenues come from to wean ourselves off OPEC oil? Bottomline this is about slavery to OPEC and pollution, so it's a national defence, security and environmental issue all in one. And it would show we can once again lead the world. Germany by the way is already doing all this and is way ahead of us in some ways. These are my ideas not Kerry's. He hasn't disclosed such plans, if any, yet. If Kerry becomes President, you may not vote for him but you will enjoy the benefits after his new ideas go into effect. We will be a cleaner, richer and stronger nation.
