Hardware trouble ...

If you have hardware trouble, you should be able to either download some testing software or use the diagnostics provided by your computer manufacturer. On my system, the Dell tests take about an hour. When finished, I have confidence my hardware is OK.

Software trouble...

If you have software trouble, the last resort, which always works, is to reload your system. (Provided you don't simply reload defective software.)

Gateway technical advice...

It appears the person at Gateway is a little confused. Overwriting your disk is a drastic measure to correct a software problem, while installing a new disk corrects failed hardware. One or the other may be appropriate, but not both.

You may want to insist the trouble be identified before a remedy is undertaken.
