The more people advance, the less likely they are to come to the fore.
People don't advance. At least not very fast. We're dealing with the same humans that started civilization 10,000 years ago. And the same ones that will be here 10,000 years from now. Unless genetic engineering is used.

First of all, we are a long, long way from being able to do it.
I'd be quite surprised if the capability does not exist within the next century.

But more important, Mao and Saddam and their like aren't Americans.
What Americans do or want to do in this matter may be entirely irrelevant.

Do I want any of this? No. But that's likely to be irrelevant too.

"Laz, if it can happen, it will happen, and it will happen to us rather than for us. Is that what you want?"

You left out the possibility that it could happen by us and to us, rather than for us. Is that what you want?
