Swami Vivekananda put a full page ad in the Oakland Tribune in 1900 warning, "Stay out of Heaven", when the local Christians were having a revival and their head lunatic exhorted the flock to pray to go to heaven. Even though he was penniless he managed to arrange to exchange work for the ad, because he sincerely believed that it isn't in man's interest to seek such mundane things as heaven. Of course, he was motivated by his belief that whatever heaven a man may attain from the merit of secular acts, he will have to come back here and continue until the true goal is reached.

So it is with money. Stay away from it. It all comes from God anyway and you can't add a dime by your own efforts although it appears that you make it happen. An honest report says that you just happened to end up with more or less money. A more honest one says that whether you got more or less money didn't make a difference. The only purpose in such effort is to aggrandize the unripe ego.

The pay for the effort is grief and suffering. The minute you recognize the truth of that you can never savor money. That's why one doesn't hear reports about the disaster that comes from having it. Those who have it can't admit to others and themselves what a sorry state of affairs it all is. If they do, they have to acknowledge that their suffering comes from having it and that would go against what they've been programmed to accept as the purpose of life.

Does this mean that you shouldn't seek money? If you really think it will make some difference, then you will have to get into the cooker. If you ask God for money or heaven, you'll get them, but don't be surprised if you find they aren't what they're cracked up to be. Stay out of money!
