What is science for, then, and how did you become aware of its appropriate uses?

I didn't say I know what science is for. I would say, if pressed for an off-the-cuff answer, that it is supposed to further our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and provide us with tools for manipulating that world. I could probably do better than that if I really thought about it, but that isn't the question I set out to address. I did say that science is not supposed to make us better people. That would make a poor purpose for science, IMO, because it is a purpose that science is unlikely to attain.

The appropriate uses of science are not for me to determine, and my opinion of what they are is not very relevant to anything.
