It could be that the 512KB Barton design was done in bulk so that it would be compatible with the UMC 0.13u process. I think this is the safe thing to do, in case there are problems with the SOI ramp.

<Barton with 512kb confirmed, no SOI?>

I don't like this at all. AMD slapped a 512KB L2 on T-bred and called it Barton. This appears to be a quick fix to fill the hole left by the real (SOI) Barton, now dead. I hope this is not an indications of deeper SOI-related problems that will affect the Hammer schedules as well.

Thank you for recommending this post to our Best of feature.

Ok, I was pretty shocked to see the new roadmap, but it shouldn't be too terribly surprising. I just chatted with Damon Muzny about what this means, and the thinking behind it.

Damon said that it really made no sense to have two mainstream products try to share the same SOI process. Hammer is progressing MUCH better than expected, and due to the timing of the SOI conversion with what AMD expects the Hammer to sample at, it made little sense to try and produce Barton on SOI (as AMD will need nearly all the SOI production for its Clawhammer chip).

So taking SOI out of the picture will decrease the overall clockspeed of the Athlon based products, so to keep them competitive with Intel's offerings and not having to rely on higher and higher clockspeeds, they thought that including 512K of L2 will keep the Athlon very competitive until the Hammer series has matured and has had ample insertion into the market (I expect beginning 2Q03 to have filled the channel and gained marketshare away from Athlon/P4).

So AMD is covering their bases here. It could very well be that Barton may show up as SOI, depending on the SOI ramp and changeover. More likely it could see production in both Dresden (non-SOI) and UMC.

This is actually very good news. While Tbred has been a non-entity so far, the switch in the roadmap shows that the Hammer series is coming along very, very nicely (should see Press samples in late August). Late September/early October is my guess for initial market penetration for Hammer systems and chips.

Pretty exciting! I am wondering how tomorrow will go...

bulk or not, i want one. It only took a few years, but now we have Mustang. Clawhammer maybe impressive, but a large cache athlon ought to be an excellent value processor esp. oc'd to 166+ MHz FSB.
