Actually the federal government's getting bigger and much more controlling under Bush right now. But I am not against certain parts of that. Nor I am I for parts of liberal plans of the past. The reality is that every plan ends up a compromise, in the middle somewhere. If anyone ran on a socialist platform they'd never be elected except maybe in a few neighborhoods. Indeed, we have no socialist leaders in this country. So calling Democrats socialist is like calling Republicans fascists. It's a silly exaggeration. Canada for instance is much more socialist than the US and they are hardly commies up there, are they? And do you hear Canadians complaining? Or northern Europeans for that matter? Not very often. You've got to open your mind and see things the way they really are instead of cliches. The US will never become more than 10% more socialist or 10% less socialist, and never as socialist as northern Europe. Fine with me. So don't expect a big difference no matter which party is in power. Post 9/11 it's time for anti-government right-wingers to drop their silly paranoia about the federal government. All that did was weaken the FBI, ATF and justice department. The fact is we need the federal government to be strong and a bit controlling, not only in crisis/war times but also in terms of protecting our public/financial/environmental assets, enforcing laws, building infrastructure, taking care of major social problems and offering incentives and penalties in order to steer us toward wiser choices. Like hydrogen cars instead of gas-fueled cars. As for non-vouchers being socialist, I don't see the logic there. Vouchers are mainly a way to fund religious schools using public money. Because we're supposed to have a separation of church and state that's a troublesome question. I don't think public funds should be used for religions or their schools. It is asking for trouble. Universal healthcare would be a great step if they could do it right. Our healthcare system is in disarray and that will come back to cost us. Tricky issue though. No easy answer. All we know is we've got problems with the present system.
