Yes, the White House may very well be considering something along these lines. I read a while back in the JPost that Bush is withholding aid in the amount (I think) of 600 or 800 million to Israel. A couple of European countries last week decided to stop sales of arms to Israel, and Belgium is cutting off aid to both Palestine and Israel. There are rumblings of EU trade sanctions and this would really hurt Israel...32% of their exports go to Europe. The EU did vote this week to suspend preferential trade agreements which will be costly. Trade relations with China have been seriously damaged over the Phalcon radar fiasco, and Israel has agreed to settle with China to the tune of 350 million. Both Moody's and Standard and Poor's have downgraded Israeli debt. The always fragile Israeli economy is to some extent imploding as Sharon piles on more debt to finance his war efforts. Privatization of govt. owned enterprises has been put on hold. All in all, Sharon is risking alot economically to continue suppressing the Palestinian people who seem to have nine lives. And I doubt that the average Israeli realizes how precarious their economy is.

The timing of an imposed settlement couldn't be better. The Europeans are for it. Only time will tell what the U.S. does.
