That means that for 10 years the US supported Israel. I think that's consistent with what I wrote:

And who was supporting Egypt and Syria, Israel two main antagonists during the '70s??.. The Soviets, of course.

That's what is so frustrating about how people throw facts and figures around.. "Oh.. the US has been giving Israel such and such amount of money, so they are responsible for what the Israelis do..."...

Well, listen.. we can blame the Russians too, if you'd like.. And how about the French and British, who both supported Israel, and also coordinated with them to re-open the Suez canal in 1956?? Does the US receive any kudos for forcing those nation to withdraw and let Nasser nationalize that waterway and prevent any ships from transiting it??

And to an extent you're correct with regard to your logic about supporting the "moral" side.. Nations don't have friends, only interests.

And right now, it is in the US interest to destroy the leadership infrastructure that is fostering muslim extremism.

And it's in our interest to foster the creation of democratic foundations that, one day, might actually be able to take root in the Muslim world.

And it's in our interest to defeat Arafat and his terrorist minions.

And it's in our interest to RAPIDLY decrease our reliance upon Persian gulf oil.

And it's in our interest to support those regimes which take active steps to properly manage and distribute whatever foreign aid the US provides.

And it's in our interest to overthrow those regimes which not oppress their own people, but also threaten (verbally or physically) or target Americans, where ever they might be located.

Anyone who has read my posts for the past several months know that I'm not particularly an Israelphile. I firmly believe the Israelis knew about 9/11 (as probably did numerous Arab intelligence services), and I believe they deliberately attacked the USS Liberty.

But I also analyze such situations from the perspective of "what would I do were I in their shoes" (which I hardily recommend for anyone else out here trying to analyze this morasse)... The Israelis have interests as well, just as do the Jordanians, Palestinians, Saudis, Syrians, Lebanese, Egyptians, and every other state...

And those states which are strong enough to advance their interests will be the ones who "call the tune"..

Hawk

<<< There is no question that the Palestinians and the Israelis are going to continue fighting.>>

I’m not so sure. I’ve met enough Palestinian Arabs in my life to realize that they are basically simple – and normal – people, just like you and me. What’s killing them, is the ‘momentum’ of hostilities, from which a person can’t escape.

If, for instance, you are a Palestinian, you have no choice but to scream around about your hatred for Jews, about how they must be thrown into the sea, and so on. Failing to do so is liable to get you have your throat slashed and your butt shot off. Like it or not, you don’t have a choice.

Once the real powers behind the ME conflict, the Saudi’s, the Syrians and others make up their minds that it is in their interest to recognize Israel’s right to exist, and start negotiating a settlement for real, much, much wind will be lost out of the sails of the extremists.
