Hawk: I travel at least 100,000 miles a year and get to see the reaction of people in many countries to our foreign policy. After September 11 there was a huge and tangible outpouring of support for the US -- heartfelt and from all over the world. I did not, in any way accept a connection between bin Laden's terror and the Palestine issue -- nothing excuses what was done to us. I don't expect Israel to listen to excuses about Arafat or suicide bombers either. But lets be clear -- the actions of Israel, which Bush clearly and publicly did not approve, have cost us a great deal of support in our own war against terrorism. I believe we support Israel in part on humanitarian grounds, but increasingly on pure political grounds -- as a result of a strong and wealthy Jewish lobby in Washington. Its a free country -- I don't mind them exercising their political rights. But I believe the Israeli occupation and more so the Jewish settlements are polarizing the world in such a way that my security is threatened. I was in Manila two weeks ago and in the three days I was there, 13 bombs were found and defused in the city. Did you hear about that? No. We cannot afford to arm Israel to the teeth and then pretend that it does not matter if they use that military against civilians. I don't want Israel to contribute to the escalation of violence of this world. Israel is threatening the security of my children in America -- and I have no intention of quietly helping to pay to keep their military armed and equipped to kill civilians or protect settlements, both of which simply add to the risks that we will bring this disease to our shores on a regular basis.
