S Huntington's Clash of Civilizations- was a very enlightening book for me. The more I see what is going on in continental Europe, the more I wonder if they will survive the growing Islamic penetration of their borders.

Peculiar sequence of events that the USSR should fall and Russia begins recovering as a big energy exporter as our ME oil dependency becomes more of a problem. A problem in common with Europe is our dependency on Mideast oil. They will share our motivation after they get threatened enough and realize they have no choice if they are going to maintain their identity.

Funny thing about oil is in the long term the Mideast holds a very strong oil hand. But perhaps over a short to intermediate term if the USA decides to really save on oil in order to squeeze the Mideast, I suspect we could gain allot of leverage. Perhaps with conservation in the West with our lead and Russia pumping like mad we could force some changes for the better. Clearly this would be a long term strategy, but I believe in many ways it is unavoidable.

I dont hope for war, and maybe it is not inevitable, but as long as we maintain our addiction to cheap energy and all that brings I fear we will be sacrificing our children to war because we could fight smart through conservation.
