Tony - You wrote So all they're shipping so far are 1.2 and 1.3 GHz processors, right?

AMD was already shipping 0.18 micron mobile versions in this speed range.
That tells us a lot about the speed of their new 0.13 micron process - it is no faster - and possibly slower - than their older 0.18 micron process.
How can this be?

Tony, re: "So all they're shipping so far are 1.2 and 1.3 GHz processors, right?"

AMD's April 15 pricelist had Athlon 4 at 1GHz, 1.1GHz, 1.2GHz, 1500+ and 1600+. These were all previously announced 180nm processors. The new pricelist only lists up to 1.2GHz but you can buy the other speeds in notebooks from Compaq so they must have shipped. Odd they dropped off the pricelist.

The Mobile Athlon XP ranges from 1400+ to 1700+ so only one additional speed grade and this is likely a 66MHz step instead of 100MHz since they now sport a 133MHz FSB option.

Tony, Re: "...models 1400+ and 1500+, began in first quarter of 2002..."

I just noticed this line. It's been more than 2 weeks since the end of the last quarter, so even if Thoroughbred began "shipping" on March 31st, it should have had plenty of time to make news earlier than today. I'd like to keep a look out for first available Thoroughbred laptops, and calculate the lag between "shipping" and "volumes".

Tony, can you say <font color=red>"Paper Launch"?

According to this press release, Thoroughbred will only ship in Japan and Europe this quarter. Neither of these companies plan to ship immediately - the earliest being Sharp next month.

And yet AMD says they starting "shipping" last quarter...?

biz.yahoo.com

"Systems featuring the mobile AMD Athlon XP processor are expected to be available from Sharp Corporation in Japan. Scheduled to ship in early May, the new processor will be included in Sharp's Mebius PC-GP1-C7H A4-size all-in-one notebooks with a 15`` LCD screen. Later this quarter, Epson Direct is expected to ship notebook PCs based on the new mobile AMD Athlon XP processor in Japan, while Packard Bell plans to release systems featuring the new AMD mobile processor in Europe."
