From the Washington Post Article:

"In the fight for Tora Bora, corrupt local militias did not live up to promises to seal off the mountain redoubt, and some colluded in the escape of fleeing al Qaeda fighters. Franks did not perceive the setbacks soon enough, some officials said, because he ran the war from Tampa with no commander on the scene above the rank of lieutenant colonel. The first Americans did not arrive until three days into the fighting. "No one had the big picture," one defense official said."

Looks like Frank fought a "TV" War.

OK, I get your point. I've heard it before, possibly on this thread. I'll stick with mine. In my version, closeted gays remain in the closet. In your version, there are public orgies in the showers, Sodom & Gomorrah right here in River City. I think my version is closer to the truth.

Mike,

On your "gays in the military" post, my keyboard is just absolutely going nuts pushing keys right and left, trying to get loose to type a response. My keyboard says there are so many things wrong with that post, it will take all morning to work them through.

But let's don't do it here. This thread is about foreign policy issues.

they are a rare exception and the military is not the place for exceptions.

I disagree with the former, and concur with the latter.

This is not about whether gays are cowards or poor soldiers. Remember the Spartans of Greek history and you'll find no better soldiers during that period.

But just as with women in the trenches, it's about unit cohesion. That, I believe, is the crux of your argument UncleWest..

And you and I agree with the don't ask, don't tell, policy.. If someone is gay and they can keep it private in such a way that it does not impact unit cohesion, I have no problem with their serving. But in the interest of unit and command cohesion, if other soldiers find out and it becomes an issue, then they should be honorably discharged.

Serving in the military is a privilege, not a right. And the needs of the many ALWAYS outweigh the needs of the few.

They segregate women and men from training together to prevent fraternization and degradation of unit cohesion... should it not also be the case for gays? We can't train gays separately, since there will still be a sexual fraternization issue between each of them. We can't train them with straight members of the opposite sex (who's sexual preference they would share) for the same reasons...

So for the very same reasons that people with medical and psychological conditions that make them incompatible with military service are discharged, the same should apply for gays who come out of the closet during their military service.
