I would love to find out where the Economist came up with that $1 billion a day figure. If that's true it is bizarre to the point of being insane. The West pours billions into aid projects in the developing world, and ties in all kinds of constraints to force developing nations to lower tariffs and open their markets. Then we turn around and spend $1 billion a day to prevent the same countries from exporting they only products they can efficiently produce? Then we wonder why we aren't popular in the developing world....

The figure was cited as covering only agricultural products. I wonder what it would be if it were expanded to cover light manufactured goods, textiles, etc.

I would really like to know the source on that figure, and how it was generated.
