I am not sure which software your dentist is using, but I will give the statistics on my experience of crash rates on Wintel systems:

Windows 98 - crashed about once a week
Windows NT - crashed once every few months, with the dreaded Blue Screen of Death- which sometimes took a day of recovery.

Windows 2000- No crash in >18 months of usage
Windows XP - No crash in 5 months.

My data was not gathered with scientific precision, but I am hearing similar stories from everyone else.

Agreed that Sun may still be more reliable and still has the legacy software advantage, but the reliability gap is imperceptible for most users. Your dentist experience is a reflection of old technology
