I have the same misgiving, although I want more memorization of essential data. I mean, there were times when the homework burden was ridiculous, and they started the finals in 9th grade without adequate preparation for the challenge, thus hurting a lot of childrens' grades. Also, a lot of children are over- programmed with afterschool activities, which may keep them out of mischief, but also keeps them from having elbow room to grow as children. The marching band, for example, has a horrible schedule of rehearsal, performance, and competition, for nearly half the year........

<<Currently, my eldest is trying to memorize all the state capitols; clearly a necessary skill>>

My God! How can they DO such a thing! Next they'll be making him learn how to spell and memorize MULTIPLICATION TABLES!!

Then it's a slippery slope to LONG DIVISION (shudder)...

What are they DOING to the poor kids?!?

And it gets worse: They may actually make him write a proper paragraph, or read a book and understand what he read!

What's he supposed to do with crap like that-when he can expect to have James Carville do all his thinking for him?...

Kevin,

Don't underestimate rote learning.....it's extremely beneficial to a child's overall education. The mental exercise of memorization alone is worthwhile & understanding follows as well.
Many American students cannot name their own state capitol....be thankful for small blessings.
