QS, that was an excellent post, and the answer is there was nothing to stop Sunw building this if they had stopped focusing on telling everbody how bad MSFT is.

The fact that Apple can produce such a machine shows what a sack of cac the allegations of a MS monopoly is.

MS has a monopoly on MS software. So what?

QS - I have been on the edge of buying the new powerbook for a while now. All of the reasons you cite.

I think the answer to your question is that Sun has never paid much attention to end users, and has depended mostly on outsiders for the small amount of SW they actually offer, so they don't have the culture or mindset to do an end user product. In the workstation market, there was so much available that it didn't matter. PCs are a different issue.

Not just for 14-year-old girls, but for anyone. There's simply no discussion to be had on the subject except price, and I'm not sure how that really stacks up when you add in the quality of bundled software and the dollar value of the ease-of-use.

can't answer your SunW question, but as far as price, it is very much the same as a wintelPC alternative, if you include a high quality flat panel screen and the brd to drive it....and the number of drives you would need to equal a Mac superdrive..... maybe even the Mac is a little cheaper, and that's just for the hardware, not to mention the software bundle you get....

so to answer your question the price is not a factor either....
