Religious parties have inordinate power in the Knesset, due to proportional representation and the need to build coalition governments. The use of the Orthodox criteria is highly controversial in Israel, and would probably be abandoned under a different electoral system. In any case, I would be considered a Jew, since I was born after my morher converted, as long as the conversion was under Orthodox protocols, something of which I am not sure. My mother is Anglo- Italian........
