SAN JOSE, Calif. –– Chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. posted a smaller-than-expected loss in the first quarter, buoyed by strong PC processor sales.

For the three months ended March 31, AMD lost $9.2 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with a profit of $124.8 million, or 37 cents a share in the same period a year ago, the company said Wednesday.

Revenues were down 24 percent to $902 million, compared with $1.2 billion last year. But AMD said it sold 8 million PC processors, a record for the quarter.

Analysts were expecting a loss of 6 cents a share on revenues of $900 million, according to a survey by Thomson Financial/First Call.
