Nextel Loss Widened as Revenue Rose
Firm Says It Added Business Clients

washingtonpost.com

Nextel Communications Inc. said yesterday that high-paying business customers are still buying its cell-phone services, even though the company lost $654 million (82 cents per share) during the first quarter of this year on increased revenue of $2.16 billion.

That compares with a loss of $428 million (56 cents per share) on revenue of $1.74 billion during the same period a year ago.

The Reston wireless firm, which has been trying to cut costs and deal with its near-bankrupt international unit, wrote down $335 million in goodwill to comply with new accounting rules and paid $40 million in restructuring charges during the quarter ended March 31. Analysts had expected the company to lose 40 cents a share during its first quarter. Excluding the various charges, the company lost 35 cents a share.
