Samsung Electronics profit hits all-time high

Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC), the world's largest microchip maker, posted an all time high net profit of 1.8 trillion won (1.37 billion dollars) in the first quarter.

SEC's recurring profit from January to March surged to 2.1 trillion won from 1.5 trillion won a year ago, South Korea's Maeil Business News TV said, citing an named SEC source.

SEC's first quarter sales stood at 11.8 trillion won, with revenue from its semiconductor division at 3.4 trillion won, it said.

The company declined to confirm the report, saying results would be released on Friday.

Kyobo Securities projected SEC's net profit in the first quarter at 1.6 trillijon won on sales of 9.6 trillion won.

Samsung Electronics had led a rally this week in the Seoul bourse whose main index surged to a 26-month high of 930.51 points on Wednesday on expectations that the company would report strong earnings.
