SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore shares lost ground by midday on Thursday as blue chips slipped after Wall Street's weakness and ahead of earnings from key firms like Keppel Corp and Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing.

Small and mid-cap stocks again dominated volumes with food company QAF Ltd jumping 10.3 percent on positive recommendations from brokerages.

"The market is cautious as it waits for Keppel's results this evening and Chartered's on Friday morning. There's a bit of retail and punting interest in some of the small cap stocks," said Chan Tuck Sing, head of sales at OUB Securities Pte Ltd.

The bellwether Straits Times Index was down 0.94 percent or 16.63 points at 1,754.71 by the break.

Losers beat gainers 144 to 94 in the broader market as volume fell to 336 million shares from 454 million at midday on Wednesday.
