George: It appears you have sniffed too many exhaust fumes over the years. The reason the United States has never launched a comprehensive alternative-energy program is because of (1) America's love affair with gas-guzzling automobiles/trucks/SUVs; (2) How intertwined our economy is to gasoline and diesel fuel; (3) The political influence wielded by GM, Exxon, Dick Cheney, GWB et al. Re: "Abandonment of the space program constitutes a tacit admission that it was an extravagant waste": The space program yielded an amazing amount of technical knowledge, and said information is still pouring in (Hubble Telescope). The amount of money we spent exploring our last frontier today pales in comparison to the amount of money our government wastes annually on various forms of corporate welfare.
