I guess the idea is that the less dependant we are on Iraqi and Saudi oil the less oil would be driving our politics in the middle east.
Take Saudi's for example; we support the government against the wishes of their people only to kiss up to the same government when they openly support terrorism.

Earlier I think Ted was trying to tie Bush to Stalin but didn't quite make it.

Isn't there a commercial about buying, using drugs you're supporting the terrorists? Looking at the backgrounds of the 9/11 terrorists, buying oil from Saudi Arabia ain't much different is it?
