David,

The bigger question, however, is "Why Not?". The argument that the liberals have put forth is laughingly absurd. If people understood the facts it wouldn't even be an issue. But you can never underestimate the intellect of the American public.

Suppose you own the entire ANWAR, and are a young man, not about to die anytime soon. What would you do with it? I would try to maximize my return, to get as much money from selling this oil on world markets as possible. It just does not make sense to do it now. Oil is laughingly cheap.

If anything the US government should be doing now is to fill up the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to the full capacity (remember, the previous administration used up a portion for purely political reasons), and to possibly increase the storage, and buy even more.

There are several marginal producers of oil of today, who are producing, but do not have a lot of years of production left (USA being the best example, from existing sources). Why not wait until these marginal producers run out of their oil, and start selling then? It could be within 20 to 50 years. The price of oil will be a multiple of today's price. That will be a good time to open up ANWAR.

Joe
