Re:Market share claims abound as AMD and Intel post divergent figures

To the degree that Intel had any gains at all in Q4, most or all were due to the inclusion of game console chips in their PC CPU count.

Their game console chip business fell off last quarter, so they lost share according to their numbers.

My own take is they didn't gain much share in Q4 of last year, but probably didn't lose much "real" share (defining "real" as computers chips, not game console chips) this past quarter, either.

According to Intel's method of calculating market share, it's probably trailing Motorola in terms of CPU sales, since the sum of Motorola CPUs sold into the Macintosh and automotive markets may exceed the number CPUs Intel sells into the combined PC and game console markets.

Alas, that puts AMD into number three in CPU sales, behind Motorola #1 and Intel #2.
